Why you need to exclude your brandname from Pmax

Performance Max loves your brand traffic. Someone searches your shop’s name, clicks, buys — and Pmax books the conversion as its own. The campaign looks brilliant. The question is whether it did anything.

That sale was coming anyway. The customer knew you, typed your name, and would have clicked the organic result one position lower — for free. When brand traffic flows into Pmax unchecked, you pay for conversions you already owned, and the reported ROAS tells you nothing about what the campaign added.

Accurate performance assessment

Excluding branded search terms gives you a clean read on what the campaign actually does. Brand keywords skew the data and flatter the result. Take them out and you can see how well Pmax engages and converts people who don’t know you yet — which is the only job you hired it for.

A clearer view of conversion impact

With brand terms in, most conversions come from people who were already going to buy. The numbers go up; the meaning goes down. Excluding brand shows you how the campaign influences sales that come from reaching a wider audience.

Cost control and detail

Brand exclusion also gives you back control over what you pay per term. Run a separate branded Standard Shopping campaign next to Pmax and you get the cost detail Pmax will never show you — which is what you need to make an actual decision.

No misallocated budget

Left alone, Pmax spends on terms that were already yours. That budget does nothing for growth, and it quietly stops the campaign from doing the job it was set up to do: reaching new customer segments.

How to exclude your brand in a Pmax campaign

  1. Open your Google Ads account.
  2. Select the Pmax campaign and go to its settings.
  3. Create a new brand list with your brand terms.
  4. Apply that brand list to the right Pmax campaigns and save.
  5. Set up a dedicated Shopping campaign, built on a search term split, to cover your brand searches properly.

Check the Insights tab over the following days and confirm your brand name has stopped showing up.

Exclude your brand as a campaign-level negative, run brand in its own cheap Search campaign, and judge Pmax on what’s left. If it still performs, now you know it’s real.

Google makes this exclusion deliberately hard to find. Set it up once, and every future budget discussion gets easier — because the numbers finally mean something.
